Karl, if you want to go long volatility with an ETF or ETN, you should do it with UVXY. TVIX's premium to NAV is approaching 90%, so if its NAV moves up, the premium will just melt away, reducing your gains. This is a much more dangerous fund than 99% plus of the trading public realizes.

I feel the same way about the inverse Russell, SRTY. It has died, like TVIX. And I'm so stupid for holding it long for over 5 months. frown.gif

Hi, great advice - many thanks! I had no idea about UVXY - all the lists and articles I've read failed to mention it (I would have remembered its huge 52-week gap) I typically searched 'list' and 'bear funds'/'bear ETFs'.

UVXY appears to run with the VIX much closer than TVIX, as well.

Are there any other bearish funds you recommend? I'm not sure if I want to do FAZ since the US banks are being touted as largely recovered.

No, honestly I don't recommend any of them, including UVXY. Make sure you know its ins and outs before trading it, as it does not relate to VIX, just VIX futures, and they are in contango, forcing UVXY holders to pay for the privilege of owning them. I've explained this in detail in TVIX thread and the daily analysis threads. Don't fly this bird without knowing all about it.

calendars can probably work really well for puts. The premium for the otm options on this are insane.

CS now is going to issue new TVIX shares. This reminds me of an old Ice Cube rap "jack 'dem MFs for them Nissan trucks... right in the drive through.... straight jackin'!"

ED: Philo called it that this might be happening, I called that it was a coordinated dump today before we found out a big hedgie dumped theirs... surely they got this news early, too.

The press release:

Credit Suisse Plans to Reopen Issuance of VelocityShares Daily 2x Long VIX Short-Term ETN (Ticker Symbol: “TVIX”) on a Limited Basis

New York, March 22, 2012 Credit Suisse announced today that it plans to reopen issuance of the VelocityShares Daily 2x VIX Short-Term ETNs (Ticker Symbol: “TVIX”) on a limited basis. The ETNs were temporarily suspended from further issuance by Credit Suisse on February 21, 2012 due to internal limits on the size of the ETNs. At present, the ETNs are trading at a premium to their indicative value.

Beginning March 23, 2012, Credit Suisse may from time to time issue the ETNs into inventory of its affiliates to make the ETNs available for lending at or about rates that prevailed prior to the temporary suspension of issuances of the ETNs. Also, beginning as soon as March 28, 2012, Credit Suisse may issue additional ETNs from time to time to be sold solely to authorized market makers. Credit Suisse may condition its acceptance of a market maker’s offer to purchase the ETNs on its agreeing to sell to Credit Suisse specified hedging instruments consistent with Credit Suisse’s hedging strategy, including but not limited to swaps. Any such hedging instruments will be executed on the basis of the indicative value of the ETNs at that time, will not reflect any premium or discount in the trading price of the ETNs over their indicative value and will be on terms acceptable to Credit Suisse, including the counterparty meeting Credit Suisse’s creditworthiness requirements, margin requirements, minimum size and duration requirements and such other terms as Credit Suisse deems appropriate in its sole discretion. This action does not affect the Early Redemption rights of noteholders as described in the pricing supplement. The other ETNs issued by Credit Suisse are not affected by this action.

Here is a good read on some of the issues surrounding TVIX, also a general read on exchange traded products.

I think TVIX will be one of the final nails in the coffin for the creation of these leveraged on leverage type products.

Many thanks. Is there an inverse fund to TVIX or UVXY that can be shorted?

Check out SVXY.

Totally awesome. Many thanks!

Wowee! How low is this going to go? It has to be a hedge buy at some point (not a long-term hold but if it drops to $2 why not?)

...theoretically, to zero, but it will reverse split long before that and then continue to decay.

flipped it today in at 6.18 out at 6.60

This has the potential to bounce hardcore after getting crushed so badly. Market deosnt look like its going to get a haircut anytime in the immediate future so I will wait on the sidelines again

Just a lurker on here, but massive climb taking place. I got in a little late but still killing it.
