Props to Obama for this. 2 billion a year isn't much, but its something.

Fair point that unilaterally making this cut is efficient but perhaps lazy. Makes much more sense to freeze pay of someone making 100,000+ than someone making 30,000 (veterans)

Like to see the Tea Party get behind him 100% on this...

The GOP will find some reason to block it.

Veterans are pensioners.

Article mentions veterans; I went with that. You could use soldiers, border patrolers, social workers, etc.

Studies show that inflated government pay mostly comes from higher-levels; that is what they should target.

Anyways, overall, a good move. I think there are much better piggys out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if this saves us more money than "banning earmarks", a vague concept that is already being subverted (by people who pushed for the ban!).

Here's an old idea--how about the government stop paying $300 for a framing hammer...and $900 for a toilet seat..or the every popular bridges to everywhere and nowhere and billion dollar fruit fly insect research projects done on Guam...and so on..

IOW--how about they address pork spending for special interests--congressional 'friends' and other wasteful BS spending--those bigger ticket items that really add up..and the ONE thing the O' campaigned heavily on immediately cutting and eliminating--but hasn't.. They blew $208BILLION in the past 10 years on pork alone..and probably more then that. Here are a few examples in the past couple years..

2008 ($17.2 billion in earmark spending)

$211,509 for olive fruit fly research in Paris, France

$148,950 for the

Montana Sheep Institute (Ok--this is a Jaz favorite special interest... )

$98,000 to develop a walking tour of Boydton, Virginia

$196,000 to renovate the historic downtown Las Vegas Post Office
2009 ($19.6 billion in earmark spending)

$1.9 million for a

water taxi service to Pleasure Beach, Connecticut - population 0

And, speaking of pork barrel spending, we finished up the decade with:

$1.8 million in swine odor and manure management research in Ames Iowa http://usgovinfo.about.com/gi/o.htm?.../www.cagw.org/

How about they fix the real major problems....you start to prune from the top--not from the bottom.

See, I don't think 20 billion in earmarks is a "major" problem. That is less than 2% of the budget deficit...that isn't a big piggy.

Should we tackle it? Yes! But there are many more things you can propose to cut the deficit.

Cut tax loopholes (100+ billion). Introduce cap and trade (200+ billion). Punish corporations for outsourcing. End Medicaid (200+ billion). End Department of Homeland Security (50+ billion) and Education (50+ billion). Cut military spending to 2001-levels (250+ billion). Get out of Germany, Korea, Japan, etc. (50+ billion). Monetize surplus federal property (worth 1.2 trillion). End corporate welfare (80+ billion). Close bad programs in department of housing and development (10+ billion). Severely cut departments in housing and development (100+ billion). Introduce Ross Perot's gas tax (70+ billion)....

On and on....

Those are great places to cut too...and I'm not dismissing those either or trying to prioritize one over another.. It just seems when you go after salaries or COLA's etc--as a 'cost saving' or value engineering method or whatever clever term they put to it--its really the smallest thing that can be done to solve the problem by a self-serving 'management' or government but its felt and impacts the most--its like lets not shake the tree at its core--its lets rip at its leaves. They don't want to tighten their belts or do anything but business as usual for the majority of things--but they will tighten your belts for you and say they DID something..and hint that you should be glad they don't do any more... Its the old saying--let the peasants eat cake....

Also I admit that I just dislike 'earmarks' in general....a stupid way to do business--a dishonest way IMO....and its a wasteful way to 'manipulate' the system with 'favors'....and I note it ends up 'funding' a lot of BS and useless things in order to get real things passed or as payback for something kicked back or under a table--or shot down--which then it becomes a boat anchor to a system that could resolve a problem...

Speaking as a Federal Employee, I think it's a good idea.

I don't see why we need to get a pay increase every year like clock work, on top of our already pay increase we get, plus any bonuses we get. They should cut it all out, a huge waste of money.

You're clearly a Socialist.

Hey, you forgot Racist and Homophobe and "Christian".

But the kicker is, you put clearly before the word, which makes it so true.

I didn't want to be rude, but the term is "so-called Christian." There's a big difference between a "so-called Christian" and a "Christian."

"Thousands of civilian federal employees are serving alongside our armed forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and other dangerous posts around the world," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.). "While the president, justifiably, is not proposing to freeze military pay, federal employees working in those war zones and facing the same risks of death and injury should receive the same respect."

OK. But the main point still stands. Even that quote you mentioned acknowledges that it isn't in everyone best interests to make unspecified freezes...
