The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey...

We're doing it, starting next month.

Read it, imo; I'm a numbers guy and the numbers in that book didn't just jump out at me, they round-house kicked me in the throat Chuck Norris-style.

Let's see how we do and let me know what you think, GL.

Dave Ramsey is good common sense stuff. I've been running on cash flow for many years. I haven't cut up my credit cards, I keep those accounts open. It is helpful when getting a mortgage. Also, or a small business owner, I have to personally guarantee any credit purchases such as processing equipment, delivery trucks etc. The determining factor for obtaining credit for capital improvements for my business is my personal credit score.

Dave Ramsey is basically all about creating Free Cash Flow, and operating within your cash flow instead of borrowing. Just like it is good for a publicly traded corp to have no debt and a high free cash flow, it is very good for us personally to have no debt and a high free cash flow.

The only disagreement I have with Ramsey is that he says ALL debt is bad debt. I have no problem with taking on business debt for something that will add a positive cash flow.

So he's basically all about dumping your debt?

Keep us posted (with details!) on how it goes rowdy.

Will do; the goal is to have the $10K student loan and the $17K Urban Assault Vehicle (read minivan) paid off by next summer or end of 2010, at the latest. That will leave only the mortgage.

"Take home" is just under $48K/year (Enlisted military) and 4 mouths to feed, clothe, budget for, etc. (wife & 2 kiddies).

I'm excited about this; I honestly believe I can become wealthy off my income.

I don't think he's on TV regularly, but I'm not sure. He could probably come across as an ahole, though.

John Cummuta (sp?) is also good--called "Cascading Debt Cure" or something similar.
My boss swears by him, bought the course. I just frugally read the book from the library. Very down to earth, common sense, simple-living sort of money management advice.

Yeah, that sounds a lot like Ramsey actually. I liked TMMO because it made me feel stupid...and I don't like being stupid.

It's just a good time for my family right now. We can seriously cut back for 18 months max and be in a much better financial position; we won't have to cut back ever again if we do it right. I'd rather do it now than later.

18 months is a flash; It'll be over before you know it. It's nice to do something willingly, too rather than waiting until the wolves are at the door.

HLN (Headline News) has a new guy touting a similar philosophy to Dave Ramsey named Clark Howard.

Did you know he retired at 31?!!! I'm familiar with him as well, but we're sticking with TMMO.

I asked my wife if she could read a book by anybody, who would it be? She said Dave Ramsey, she loved the book, and here we are...

Rowdy, if you have your wife on board with the program you should sail through and in 18 months your life will change drastically for the better.

I did Dave Ramsey's FPU a couple years ago and it is great. It should be taught in high school. He does have a tv show on fox business and a national radio show too for those of you who are not familiar with him

He has a face for radio. They added Fox Business to my cable package recently so I watched Dave Ramsey a couple of times, just him with his big old bald head and goatee and a microphone--at least get some eye candy for us to look at.

I read 3 of his books and used to listen to him on radio. After a while you realize that he is saying the same thing over and over. Not a dig at him, I think he provides a valuable service to people. You can only go so far with him, though--there's no advanced course. He works his niche that he is comfortable with and doesn't stray. It is good to hear/read the same info over and over until it is ingrained.

Yeah its the same thing over and over and its mostly common sense (dont spend what you dont have) but America would not be in the situation its in if everybody would live by his motto

Totally agree with you

His material is definitely aimed at the "lowest common denominator".

I think he has a talent for making intelligent people feel financially stupid and that's what makes it valuable. The book was a refreshing "Wake-Up" call, but his radio show is rather repetitive and I have trouble listening to it very long.

Like trading, the strategy is important and it's easy to be drawn toward his simple and proven-effective plan. I usually do what she wants, too
