Questions asked when opening up an online broker account?

Hello Everyone,

Currently I am plowing through a list of various brokers out there, because I am almost ready to open up a broker account. Since I am a Newbie, I was just curios to know what is the basic information that will be asked of me in opening my broker account?

I pretty much figure that they will want to know my full name, address, and social security number. What else can I expect to be asked? Also, since the broker will be asking for my social security number, will they also be pulling a copy of my credit report? Since my credit is not the greatest and since I am not interested in a Margin Account, I am somewhat wondering will they need to pull my credit report?

Lastly, since I have never had an online broker account before, how do I learn how to do my trades online? Is there a basic instruction manual on their website or will they walk me through my trades over the phone (a few times) as I do them online?

The information that they'll need from you will differ from broker to broker I imagine, but last one I opened up all that was asked for is what you mentioned.

As for making trades online you should be able to get a demo version of the software to play around with. Or there are always user guides too.

They'll also ask for DL number and a bunch of other things, again, broker dependent, but mostly, required by our "anti-terrorism" laws.

What broker needed your driver's license? I've opened accounts with Scottrade and Choicetrade and never needed it. Perhaps it has changed.

Thanks Everyone. I appreciate you all for taking the time to respond. Do anyone know if the broker pulls your credit report before or after opening an account or if your credit report is pulled at all?

I think ShareBuilder, Optionsxpress, and also Zecco all required me to punch in my driver's license number, I guess so that they could verify my identity, even though they have my SSN and address. When did you apply for your account?

I don't believe that credit report is a factor at all if you are dealing with a cash account, or even a margin really. They are going to stop you out before they risk loosing any money

Scottrade back in October of 06 and Choicetrade around March of 07. I would have thought your SSN and address would have been suffice, but maybe times have changed. SSN should be standard though anyway and expected. Just the drivers license caught me off guard.
