Creationists fail in bid to offer 'science' degrees

A religious group has had its application to offer Master of Science degrees rejected by Texas authorities.

The Institute for Creation Research — which backs a literal interpretation of the Bible, including the creation of Earth in six days — was seeking a certificate to grant online degrees in science education in Texas (see Nature 451, 1030; 2008). But the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board voted unanimously last week not to grant the institute's request, following the recommendation of Raymund Paredes, the state's commissioner of higher education.

“Religious belief is not science,” Paredes said in his recommendation. “Science and religious belief are surely reconcilable, but they are not the same thing.”

The institute has 45 days to appeal or 180 days to reapply.

A 'religious belief' being awarded a 'science' degree is an oxymoron...good they were denied... Its like a evolutionist or some scientist demanding recognition with a degree in religion for HIS belief on the theory of evolution...

I can't imagine why any creationist would even WANT a "science" degree let alone have their belief tainted by calling it a science...unless they are admitting that Science folks are SMARTER then they are...

Why don't they just accept it as a degree in religious studies or theology...? These creation folks cry and cry how science destroys god and ruins their good times and bliss--and then they WANT to be declared scientists and have degrees in science which is opposite what they believe? Christian 'scientists' is not even a science and they are not scientists...and while I mean no offense to any christian scientists--seems to me it fails so many so often because of its narrowness and limitations that you can't call it a science at all..cause it follows no scientific principles or methods. There was a couple in Florida I read about a month or so ago who are facing jail now for Murder...cause rather then take their diabetic 11 y-o kid to the hospital when she was having an serious blood issue--they prayed for her...and surprise--she died.. Is that really a prayer answered?? Kids especially do not know or choose to be whatever cracked mindset of athiesm or christian or jewish or rastafarians their parents decided or choose for belief or to think...but the children often get failed to be protected for some basic chance or allowance to grow up and decide later. People seem to want GOD to be their only answer...and for him to give them personal attention and personal miracles...but they do not stop for a moment to think that perhaps God put someone on this planet with them heathen doctor skills and possibly compassion and care to, for that moment of their need, BE his representative or conduit for a miracle and who could help them...? Ignorance is not part of a belief or religious system...or a part of science...its just ignorance..

I believe in Santa and that he lives at the north pole and operates his toy business and shop there...can I have a Masters in Business and also a Geography degree??

It must have sounded better rattling around in
his head than it looks on paper. Even the Pope
says you don't have to take every single word
in the bible literally. Those words were written
during dark times by people that thought science
inquiry was clubbing the truth (or at least what they
wanted to hear) out of a gentile (ouch!).

Now before I hear any nonsense about Popes,
baby-eating contests and inquisitions, Jesus is
the GUY that appointed the very first POPE -
Peter. A few since then have bastardized the
post, but, I think things are back on track....
and NO, I'm not a catholic, just a history buff.

Let the heretic smiting begin.
Just don't ask for my lighter....

Your right tech my first comment sounded better in my head. Not on paper.

The narrative seems historical, and not symbolical; and hence the strong initial presumption is, that all its parts are to be taken in their obvious sense.... It is freely admitted that the word day is often used in the Greek Scriptures as well as the Hebrew (as in our common speech) for an epoch, a season, a time. But yet, this use is confessedly derivative. The natural day is its literal and primary meaning. Now, it is apprehended that in construing any document, while we are ready to adopt, at the demand of the context, the derived or tropical meaning, we revert to the primary one, when no such demand exists in the context

As Reformed Christians committed to the integrity of the inspired word of God, we must hold to the teachings of Scripture, rather than the ever-changing doctrines of man. Genesis is foundational to the whole Bible; Genesis 1 is foundational to Genesis. The issues that hang in the balance are enormous. We should stand — in this area as in all others — with Paul and proclaim, "Let God be true, and every man a liar" (Rom. 3:4)

Genesis 2:3 — "Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made."
Tech are you saying the almighty did not create earth in 6 days?
