Recently, I've done pretty well waiting for after earnings. When you get a fizzler that doesn't move, it crushes the options on both sides and you can pick up a great strangle for cheeeeeeap. (Or pick a side if you're confident of the direction.) You get a lot fewer plays that way, true, but they seem to work out pretty good and you avoid over paying for the premiums. Once the premium crush gets them, they don't have to move very much to make big %'s.
