April 29 (Reuters) - Human Genome Sciences Inc (HGSI.O) swung to a first-quarter profit, helped by sales of its anthrax antibody ABthrax, sending its shares up 14 percent.
For the first quarter, the company posted a net income of $129.8 million, or 85 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $52.7 million, or 39 cents a share, a year earlier.
Revenue surged 14-fold to $177.3 million, including $153.8 million from the sale and delivery of ABthrax to the United States Strategic National Stockpile (SNS).
Analysts, on an average, were expecting a profit of 53 cents a share, excluding items, on revenue of $154.4 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
The SNS keeps stock of large quantities of medicine and medical supplies to protect Americans in public emergencies like a flu outbreak, terrorist attacks or earthquakes that are severe enough to cause local supplies to run out.
Shares of the Rockville, Maryland-based company were trading at $1.59 after the bell. They closed at $1.39 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
