The first piece of news here is from the 7th and the second one is from today.

1:ARNA. The target price is set to $20.
NEW YORK, March 7 (newratings.com) - Analysts at Morgan Joseph reiterate their "buy" rating on Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc (ticker: ARNA). The target price is set to $20.

In a research note published yesterday, the analysts mention that the company has recently announced that it has dosed its first patients in the phase II trial for APD125. The recent approval for APD125 phase II trial by the FDA has eliminated the primary challenge for the proceeding of the clinical programme, the analysts say. The top-line data for the trial is expected to be available by the end of this year, according to Morgan Joseph.

Summary:
On the drug development
front, we eagerly await the results of a 3Q07 interim safety analysis
that we believe has the potential to be a major inflection point for ARNA
shares. Importantly, the company also announced that the FDA has
finally given the green light for APD125 (insomnia) to proceed into Phase II
testing. Results of a pending Phase II study are expected around YE07. With a
deep pipeline of potential blockbuster products, validating partnerships, a
very strong balance sheet with $389mm or $6.39/sh in cash, and potential for
significant newsflow in 2007, we believe ARNA represents a compelling
investment opportunity at current levels. Reiterate Buy rating.

The phase 3 trials are coming out EOM and this thing is expected to pop. It is at a very good price to buy because of a bad article that came out a week or two ago that was false.

I am waiting for my BAC to go back up to 7 or 8 so I can sell it (I got in @ 6) and then buy alot of this...

Yeah I got in before the announcement. I think the phase 3 will be a go and that this will be a monemaker. I have done alot of DD on this beforehand and feel that it has a very good chance of passing. If/when it does this stock will go up to at least 7/8 if not higher. Right now it is low 4's...

Arena Pharmaceuticals Announces Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2008 Financial Results
SAN DIEGO, March 12, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARNA) today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2008.

Arena reported a net loss allocable to common stockholders in the fourth quarter of 2008 of $62.5 million, or $0.84 per share, and a net loss allocable to common stockholders in the full year ended December 31, 2008 of $239.5 million, or $3.24 per share. This compares with a net loss allocable to common stockholders in the fourth quarter of 2007 of $40.9 million, or $0.60 per share, and a net loss allocable to common stockholders in the full year ended December 31, 2007 of $145.3 million, or $2.31 per share. The increased net loss in 2008 over 2007 is due primarily to Arena's Phase 3 clinical trial program of lorcaserin hydrochloride, or lorcaserin, for the treatment of obesity. Total revenues in the fourth quarter of 2008 were $2.7 million, compared to $4.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Total revenues in the full year ended December 31, 2008 were $9.8 million, compared to $19.3 million in the full year ended December 31, 2007. This revenue decrease in 2008 is due primarily to reaching the end of the research funding portion of Arena's collaborations with Merck & Co., Inc., and Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in the fourth quarter of 2007.

'We are excited that in only a few weeks we will be announcing top-line data from the first of two pivotal trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of lorcaserin, which has the potential to be the first in a new class of drugs selectively targeting a well validated weight loss receptor,' stated Jack Lief, Arena's President and Chief Executive Officer. 'Given the challenging economic environment, we will continue to focus our resources on the lorcaserin program. I am optimistic that data from this program, as well as from other programs in our broad pipeline, will continue to generate interest from prospective collaborators and help in our efforts to strengthen our balance sheet.'

Arena's Recent and 2008 Developments

Lorcaserin

Announced completion of dosing in BLOOM, a pivotal trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of lorcaserin. Results from the BLOOM trial are expected to be announced around the end of March 2009.Announced publication of the Phase 2b clinical trial results of lorcaserin in the December 4, 2008 issue of Obesity, the official peer reviewed journal of The Obesity Society.
Reported findings from a planned review by an independent Echocardiographic Safety Monitoring Board, or ESMB, in BLOOM. The ESMB's review of unblinded echocardiographic data performed after patients completed 12 months of dosing in the trial confirmed that differences, if any, in the rates of Food and Drug Administration-defined valvulopathy in patients treated with lorcaserin and in the control group did not meet the ESMB's predetermined stopping criteria.

They are coming EOM. Phase 2 passed w/out any problems. There is a wiki about this, and that is where I got alot of info. Here is link for anyone considering buying this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorcaserin

Arena states that "[d]ata from Phase 2 clinical trials of lorcaserin demonstrated that patients who received the drug experienced significantly greater weight loss than patients who received placebo." [8] At the end of 12 weeks, the groups which were administered lorcaserin lost an average of 4.0 pounds (10 mg/day), 5.7 pounds (15 mg/day), and 7.9 pounds (20 mg/day)[9]. The placebo group lost an average of 0.7 pounds, despite the fact that all groups received no diet or exercise instruction.
Upon discontinuation of lorcaserin treatment, lost weight is regained. In Phase 2 clinical trials, patients were tracked for 2 weeks post trial completion, and all groups regained weight more rapidly than they had lost.[10] In pre-clinical trial studies, lab rat weights returned to control levels.[11]

Arena is taking care to demonstrate [12] that lorcaserin does not cause heart valve damage in the same way as previously withdrawn serotonergic weight loss drugs such as fenfluramine and chlorphentermine. Arena stated that the Phase 2 clinical trials, the participants of which had been pre-screened to exclude valvulopathy, show that Lorcaserin "has no effect on heart valve regurgitation at 12 weeks."[13]

On March 17, 2008, Arena announced that 12-month echocardiograms of the participants of the first of three Phase 3 clinical trials ("BLOOM") did not meet the trial-stopping criteria developed by an independent Echocardiographic Data Safety Monitoring Board (EDSMB), and so the trial continues.[14] BLOOM participants will receive 18- and 24-month follow-up echocardiograms, but these results will not be reviewed by an EDSMB. Two other Phase 3 trials ("BLOSSOM", and "BLOOM-DM") provide echocardiograms but they will not be reviewed by an EDSMB. BLOOM participants were pre-screened to exclude valvulopathy, but BLOSSOM and BLOOM-DM participants were not

Like I said earlier...I have done about 2 weeks of research on this and today was the day I decided to buy this. The main reason is that they finally got financed. A pharma like this burns through alot of cash. This is very good news for 2 reasons.

1) The financier agreed to finance them AHEAD of the results. This tell me that another company has faith that these trials will be good. Maybe they have some info that we don't....who knows.

2) Arena has decided NOT to partner with a big Pharma (ie Merck) once the drug is approved and will market and sell it on their own...this is also part of why they needed a financier. This is also huge in that it shows they have a tremendous amount of trust in their product. It will also help those of us who get on the bus now as if this is approved this will be a huge cashcow.

They expect it to be approved and start selling in 2010. There is one more trial in September, but most people agree that the upcoming one is the real deal...and the last one is simply a formality.

Finally, lorcaserisn is not their only drug, so if it fails, their company will still be viable.
