Golan and Globus - Had the Midas touch, everything these guys touched turned to gold.
Former Israeli paratroopers, moved to the US in 1979 after buying a controlling interest (for 20 cents a share) in Cannon Films. The Israelis made a distribution deal with MGM and started producing exploitation fare like Death Wish 2, Enterthe Ninja and The Last American Virgin in 1981-82.
Golan and Globus wanted to create a seventh movie studio. The Cannon Group produced 125 movies in ten years. In 1986, when Cannon’s stock reached its high of $45.50, Cannon produced 43 movies.
---
Like all stories, these guys had some thing going against them, first they were cousins, which later led to a kinda holy war between the guys and they just wanted to make films
---
In 1987 the Cannon Group took $25 million cash from Warner Brothers for some of its video assets. Globus said: "Our only crime is that we love cinema. You don't see us at the Polo Lounge, on the tennis court or at parties. You see us at the office seven days a week.''
"I got involved after Menahem and Yoram split up and had this holy war against each other. Yoram Globus was my guy. Yoram was more the producer/financial side and Menahem was more of the creative guy.
---
These guys also faced something they probably couldn't have forseen the decline of film and the sharing of profits with the new found video. If you have ever seen the movie Boogie Nights, one of it's main attempts was to portray what was happening to film and how it was becoming a victim to video and the VCR. Now remember, Boogie Nights starred Mark Wahlberg, which of course Randy, the co-chair of fmly, worked closely with. I don't think Wahlberg did the part just to show off his big ####. Most likely who saw what the film was about. This is just part of what separates E&F from the same downfalls that Golan and Globus faced.
----
After a few months, the Israelis left to form yet another company, a subsidiary of First Miracle called Magic Entertainment. They put out three flops, including Speedway Junkie. Golan was fired from the company and accused of financial fraud in New York Superior Court by Miracle's owners.
---
This is where Fmly seems to enter part of the scene with Golan, working on Speedway junkie. It is obvious from here, that FMLY, E&F may have been following in the path of these giants but w/ their experience FMLY has obviously learned the mistakes that Golan and Globus made. They have Furla w/ business and trading experience. The clencher is the surprise announcement of 16 Blocks and the speed into which it was brought to DVD, shows that they are interested in $$$ and Films BOTH at the SAME TIME.
---
In the end, "after making between us (Golan and Globus) almost 300 movies and after nine years we agreed both together we're stronger, wiser and we can serve the industry better."
Golan formed New Cannon Incorporated. His partner is young Israeli filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky.
FMLY, is even show by the bashers to be following the same path as Golan and Globus, however Emmett and Furla are quite different people in a quite different time. Golan & Globus were facing a re-structure of the film industry during the 80's and now finally a record low turn out of patrons to the movie theatre in 2004. The sector has been in a lull for much too long. When Time Warner's main source of income last year was from movies. The push of the movies at the Academy Awards. I don't think you need more convincing.
Just my thoughts.........

Randy Loves Film so does Wahlberg:
Randy's interview posted in previous posts:
"I moved to Los Angeles. I worked as a development intern for Jerry Bruckheimer. I got a taste of Hollywood. I got to go to the editing room of Bad Boys and watch [director] Michael Bay. Unfortunately, I was jaded, because this was the highest level for a producer. I knew this was where I wanted to be but I didn't know there was a whole [spectrum] between Jerry Bruckheimer and nothing.
"One of my best friends was Mark Wahlberg. I met him the day I moved to LA. We hit it off. He loves film. I love film.
