Why did ethanol explode?

All these ethanol stocks going through the roof in the past week, all at the same time... why? What happened to cause this all at once? Was it the article in the Popular Mechanics' May issue?

new restrictions that force more ethonal addatives in gas - rumors are there is going to be a shortage come summer. Something like that.

Blooey, CNBC had a big thing on ethanol, that and the rising gas prices and encouraged investors to jump into those stocks.

Huge demand not enough supply. Interesting article in the Wall Street journal today about how the addition of ethanol renders previous means of transporting and storing gasoline extinct because the ethanol changes the chemical properties of the gasolien itself.

Yeh Wall Street journal on Tuesday I believe also printed the "Ahead of the Tape" (green tab on Money and Investing page) a little economic report about the rising demand for gasoline in general but particular ethanol because of yeh the same thing showme is talkin about in the previous post. Yeh I got in late on VRDM and still made 62% or somethin redonkulous. The other string suggests that it is for the long term too (what?)!

That's incorrect. Maybe if you were investing based on fundamentals. But you can also make money by trading based on T/A and momo without knowing anything about the company/stock at all.

Ethanol, another feel good, government subsidized industry where it actually requires more energy input to make ethanol than it produces when it's burned. I'm sure it will continue to be hyped with high gas prices, but it's currently not the answer to the energy problems.

if you dont know why things move, then you shouldn;t invest or trade in those stocks. you have to understand why they move the way they do. i wont put money into something that i'm ignorant on. cant know about, and track everything, and i dont even try lol.

the problem is: its easy enough to buy something on someones advice, but if your unaware of why the stock moves -then your likely to loose money by not knowing when to sell. if you like the area, read up on ethanol, read up on the stocks, and become familiar with those stocks technicals.

Yeah, perhaps you're right. The only problem is that I'm not "there". I'm here, halfway around the world from you, where I don't get news in my own language and don't have that much time to go out and seek it. But thank you for all the helpful information in your long, detailed, and explanatory post.

Another thing I should maybe point out is that I didn't ask "what is ethanol," or "why is ethanol hot," I asked "why did it go nuts all at once?" One day, it's barely moving, the next it's through the roof.

If you know why, then perhaps instead of a snide remark, you could take the opportunity to help someone out, no?
