Id say find a undervalued dividend paying company.  With minimal exposure to europe/trading around book value/low P/E/ low debt...etc

Sorry for the messed up format of my last post but would something like that be a good step in the right direction? I am still learning even though thats obvious but I know there is more to it then screening for stock what's next reading up on the company's back ground and financial's? Please bear with all my questions and posts.

Simplicity if going to be your friend. As crank said above, look for a solid company with a long history of good business and paying dividends. A company that can control debt is always a good thing. Nothing wrong with waiting for an opportune time to buy in, when prices are low. Even just jumping onto index funds may be a good idea.
