Microsoft Earnings Top Forecasts; Revenue Is Slight Miss

http://www.cnbc.com/id/48212667

Quote:
Microsoft reported earnings excluding items that beat analysts' expectations though it posted a net loss — the first since it went public in 1986 — and delivered revenue that fell short of expectations.

The loss was attributed to a previously announced charge for writing down the value of its ailing online unit.

Still, its shares rose after-hours trading on Thursday.

(Click here to get the latest quote.)

Excluding the write-down, but factoring in deferred revenue, Microsoft [MSFT  30.665  watchlist_up.gif  0.215  (+0.71%)   realtime_icon.gif]said it earned 67 cents per share in the quarter, down from 69 cents a share in the year-earlier period.

Microsoft also deferred $540 million of Windows revenue due to an upgrade discount it is offering customers who buy machines running Windows 7 before the launch of Windows 8 in late October.

The company reported a net loss of $492 million, or 6 cents per share, compared with a profit of $5.87 billion, or 69 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue was $18.06 billion, an increase from $17.37 billion a year ago but short of expectations as slowing PC sales have taken a toll on sales of the company's flagship Windows operating system.

Analysts had expected the company to report earnings excluding items of 62 cents per share on revenue of $18.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Amid the pressure from other tech giants like Google [GOOG  593.06  watchlist_up.gif  12.30 (+2.12%)   realtime_icon.gif] and Facebook [FB  29.00  watchlist_down.gif  -0.11  (-0.38%)   realtime_icon.gif], there has been some buzz questioning Microsoft's mojo.

CORRECTION:
An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that earnings excluding items were 73 cents a share. In fact, they were 67 cents a share.

Start a ruler-line at the low and have it pass thru today's down-gap :

And that's why it won't find support until 24

Earnings tomorrow look good EPS .75 cents anyone playing? I hear alot of bull talk before earnings. Windows 8 phone etc etc.

I am going to go in heavy tomorrow Feb monthly not weekly calls and stock. I think they are going to blow away earnings estimates. Earnings after bell.

A move through $27.50 could set up a run back toward the 200-Day SMA near $29.00 if results surprise to the upside. Conversely, shares could easily drop to the recent lows at $26.50 if results fall shy of consensus.

Lookin good folks earmings after the bell.

Looking at the last 2 out of 3 earnings releases the stock had a little sell off the following days.

But like you pointed out we are over the 27.50 mark.

I am debating on trying a spread, just not sure in which direction though...

Perhaps a long strangle for options exp next week? 27.50 Put .41 and 28.00 Call .43 stock at 27.76 now.

Not what I was expecting but down to 27 ask. Just shy of estimates still looks good on the chart for the future.

Did you see my posts about 6 weeks ago. I said the same thing. lol  All I can tell you is that it does get easier to use after a week or two but it still sucks. I had to download a power button for the desktop. Now that's getting pretty bad.

lol i saw it.. & lol @ the power button.. can't believe i just had to google how to shut down my computer & it takes 4 steps wtf

oh well.. hopefully i'm just frustrated that i have to learn how to use a computer from scratch and windows 8 turns out to be pretty cool once i get the hang of it

You call that one easy step? Sweep the side bar so it shows, then pick settings, power, shut down. Windows 8 sucks. Just download the link I gave Tones and pin it to your taskbar.
