I was in Asia (went to HK, Macau, Shanghai, Changping) several weeks ago. Everyone, and their mothers (literally) were using an Apple iPhone 4 (or 4s siri doesn't work in cantonese or mandarin until iOS 6, possibility that most are 4). Apparently anything before the 4 was an import phone so those weren't as frequently seen. From what I understood many of the iPhones were 4 and not the 4s from what authorized cell phone dealers told me.
However, products like the iPads, Macbooks, etc are still out of the price range for your every day people up to even most of the middle class. 4000-5000 RMB for an iPad is a bit of a reach for most consumers in China you can refer to the kidney for iPad stories. Went to several electronic stores, most Macbooks are significantly higher priced than in the US. Lots of replica Apple store fronts that sells these merchandise once you got out of SAR.
In my opinion Apple products may be extremely popular, but for many in China even with an expanding middle class their products will struggle to see a large returning consumers unless there's a radical physical change to the products annually. I felt when I was there they're really a fad based consumer, unless it looks different the bragging right isn't there most people couldn't tell I had a 4s over a 4 unless someone asked. With the iPads, macbooks, etc I've seen maybe the upper middle class or the super rich carrying them around. Could fit the 4s in there as well. The minimum wage in Macau for a full time employee is around 12k MOP (1:1 HKD or 6/7 RMB) while most casino employees are averaging 16-18k and Macau is one of the higher waged areas. So the reality of it is a new iPhone is a steep price to pay for many and again with this whole bragging right mentality I don't think the growth is necessarily there over an extended period and recycling will be slightly more common in China than new product purchased. It seems like we see articles tell us there are massive waves of people waiting in line for them in Asia, apparently the locals tell me more of them are there to hustle them after buying them than anything else. Some of the iPhone 4s went for as high as 12-15k RMB on launch day. Asia is probably the only place right now where the people's mentality is they will fight you over what they can't have buy everyone wants. In Macau there were some specialty 100 year collectors currency bills that were sold to all residents and residents only with each bill tendered at 100 MOP, there were literally people standing outside Bank of Chinas hustling for them. Each plaque went for 5k MOP a piece, I believe full set went for 10k MOP.

What happens on the next leg up will be very very important.
Also important is AAPL and its next batch of earnings. AAPL going to $1000 will be the tide that lifts all boats.
Just an interesting observation I want to make, it may or may not be relevant, I should have taken a picture of it. I was at dinner and everybody had their cell phones out on the table. Every single phone was an iphone 4. Market saturation or just customers in need of an upgrade to the next model?
It is also worth noting that there has been mention that the iphone 5 will have a different connector, so your current USB cable and peripherals will not longer work on the next iphone. Planned obsolescence is what its called.
