Noob question on shorting

If you short are you always going to be charged interest, even if your position is backed by 100% cash?

i.e. you have 100k and short 10k, are you going to get charged on the 10?

No, in fact in some cases you can gain interest off of the short cash balance, though you're probably going to have to be a big player and you may have to work something out with your broker. For example, I believe that Interactive Brokers allows you to collect interest on short positions >$100k. Or maybe it's just having $100k in your account, I forget.
